Basque is the language of the Basque people, the majority of which live in the Basque Country, a region located on the Atlantic coast, between North-Central Spain and South-Western France. Out of over 3 million Basques that live that area, approximately 1 million can speak Basque language (67% of which speak it as their first language). Basque language is also called Euskara (its official name), while the standardised form of Basque is called Batua. Basque is a "language isolate" (has no genetic relationship with any other living language). Due to the fact that the Basque people were always surrounded by speakers of Romance languages (mainly, Spanish and French), Basque naturally borrowed a large number of Romance words and roots. However, its origins are in no way connected with any Indo-European languages. There are different hipotheses that try to trace the origins of Basque language (some showing similarities between Basque and Aquitanian, others saying that such Caucasian languages as Chechen and Ingush may have the same roots with the Basque language), but at this time they are just hypotheses.
